Special win in Columbus' 50th year of cross-country

COLUMBUS JUNCTION — The Columbus boys cross-country team celebrated its 50th year of existence by defending its team title Tuesday at the Mike Jay Invitational at Cedarcrest Golf Course. It was the Wildcats’ third team championship of the season.

Isaac Acosta ‘s fifth place led the way for Columbus as its’ depth was the key factor with four other runners in the top 13.

Mitchel Pothitakis of Holy Trinity had a winning time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds.

“It was special to win this year and to have five quality boys like this is quite a weapon,” Columbus coach Steve Riley said. “I like the way they have taken care of business all season.”

Van Buren County’s Faith Neeley won the girls race in 22:05 and Cardinal’s Alexia McClure was second with Highland’s Taylor Sublette third.
