DURANT — Columbus needed all the tricks in its bag to upset the second-ranked Wilton Beavers in the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinals on Tuesday, but the tricks just weren’t there in a three-set loss.
The Wildcats had trouble with a Wilton team that game in with 30 wins. The Beavers took each set by double-digits, winning 25-4, 25-6 and 25-10.
The Columbus offense had just four kills in the loss. Emma Milder, Victoria Howell, Olivia Carrier and Michelle Diaz all finished the night with one. Sera Vela and Jobie Lekwa each had two assists.
Milder also led the defense, racking up eight kills in the loss. Vela had seven kills. Lekwa ended the night with five.
Columbus ended the night at a 90 percent serve rate. The Wildcats were unable to land any aces.
The Wildcats ended the season at 12-4, and took fifth in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, at 3-5. The Wildcats had won five of their last six games before Monday night.
Wilton will play No. 14 West Branch at West Liberty High School on Wednesday. The winner of that game will earn a berth in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament.
