CEDAR RAPIDS — The seeds are out for the 2019 Iowa High School volleyball tournament and the Van Buren County Warriors will cut their state-tournament teeth with Beckman Catholic in the first round.
Van Buren, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, took the seventh seed in the state tournament. They’ll take on second-seeded Beckman Catholic, a team that finished No. 3 in the final rankings.
The bracket is filled with seven of the top eight ranked teams in the class. The only exception is No. 2 Mediapolis, who fell in four sets to No. 10 Hudson on Tuesday night in a regional final showdown.
Hudson’s upset over Mediapolis bumped Van Buren up to the eighth seed.
Beckman has played 12 more games this season than the Warriors. Beckman finished the year 40-8, and Van Buren went 32-4. The Warriors have the second-best record in the tournament, with only third-seeded Wilton (35-3) sporting a better record.
Beckman is located in Dyervsille, just west of Dubuque. The Trailblazers had a rocky end to the regular season, losing four of their last seven games and two of their last three, but absolutely shredded their regional tournament.
Beckman went 9-0 in the regional tournament, taking out Sumner-Fredricksburg 25-12, 25-14, 25-20. defeating MFL-MarMac 25-5, 25-12, 25-12, and dumping 14th-ranked Denver 25-13, 25-12, 25-7.
The No. 1 seed went to Western Christian, who swept Boyden-Hull 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 in their regional final. The Wolfpack are ranked No. 1 by the IGHSAU, the only team ahead of Mediapolis.
