Warriors give No. 14 West Branch a run, come up short in regional semifinals

MEDIAPOLIS — Van Buren County didn’t make it easy on No. 14 West Branch in the Class 2A Region 8 semifinals but the Warriors couldn’t pull off the upset. VBC avoided a sweep with a win in the third set but fell in four, dropping the game 25-21, 25-6, 21-25, 25-14.

Despite the loss, Chelsey Huff was great again. She led the Warriors with 13 kills on the night and had a team-high .214 attack efficiency. Shea Scott had eight kills. Ella Jirak finished with six kills and three blocks. Jaelyn Boely had three kills, and Isabel Manning finished with one kill and one block.

Manning dished out 23 assists to lead the Warriors in her last high school game. She also finished the night with eight digs. Kadence Nusbaum had 25 digs on the night, and both Scott and Huff had two.

The Warriors served at a 94 percent clip and ended the day with five aces. Manning had three aces. Nusbaum and Scott finished with one ace apiece.

West Branch utilized a huge night from its top two hitters. Jaclyn Bloem had 20 kills, and Lexi Klinkkammer finished with 19. The rest of the team combined for 14.

VBC ended its season at 11-15. The Warriors had won three matches in a row, all sweeps, before their regional semifinal loss.

West Branch advanced on to the Region 8 final, which will be tonight (Wednesday) at West Liberty High School. West Branch will take on No. 2 Wilton.
