State volleyball: Bartholomew, Scheuermann make their mark

CEDAR RAPIDS — One round of the Class 2A state volleyball tournament has come and gone, and although Van Buren County won’t be in the second round, a few athletes finished the first wave with some impressive stats.

Madison Bartholomew finished round one tied for fourth in the class in service aces. Three Class 2A players had five aces in the first round. Bartholomew, along with three other players in the bracket, finished the first round with three aces.

Taryn Scheuermann finished in the top 10 in kills. She finished tied for 10th in the Class 2A bracket with nine kills in her first round game. The Class 2A kill leader was Morgan Middleton of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. She broke the Class 2A state tournament record with 34 killsi n an upset win.

The top digger in the bracket was Western Christian’s Makenna Kooima, who had 16 in a three-set sweep. Teammate Sienna Moss had three blocks in the win, tied with Grundy Center’s Emy Kracht.

The Class 2A tournament was the only bracket to see every game go just three setse. Top-seeded Western Christian, second-seeded Beckman Catholic, fourth-seeded Osage and six seed Clarion-Goldfield-Dows each swept their way to the semifinal round.
