WELLMAN — The best know how to go out on top.

Under head coach Andy Greiner, the Mid-Prairie High School baseball team returned to the state tournament this season for the first time since 2007. While the Golden Hawks lost to West Lyon at state, it did not diminish the incredible accomplishments the team achieved with head coach Greiner.

Greiner has made it known that he will resign as the head coach for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks baseball team.

“I have made sacrifices and not spent the time with my family that I want to and that has really been tugging on my heart strings,” Greiner said about what led to his decision. “I didn’t get to watch my daughter play junior varsity softball.”

Greiner, who is a small business owner, and his wife Alison have three children. Daughter Josie will be a sophomore, son Jack will be a freshman and Ruby is eight years old.

“We had a good run and it’s been fun,” Greiner said. “I’m proud of what we accomplished and there is a lot of pride in the program.”

Greiner leaves the program in a good place with the varsity going 15-4, the junior varsity had a record of 8-3-1 and the freshmen/sophomore team was 7-2.

“While Andy Greiner has not officially submitted a resignation, he has posted on his personal Facebook page that he is resigning,” Mid-Prairie athletic director Tyler Hotz said. “Andy and I had a one-on-one conversation Friday and I was aware he planned to post what he posted on Facebook after our meeting. At this point in time, I do not have a written letter from Andy Greiner saying he is resigning and we would need that to formally accept his resignation.”

Regarding any resignation, a written resignation is submitted to the board and they vote to accept or decline the resignation.

Hotz had no thoughts on a successor to Greiner.

“For hiring any head coach, we develop a timeline for people to submit applications, review applications, create interview teams, interview, and then decide on the successful applicant,” Hotz said.
