WASHINGTON — Washington High School closed out its regular season with a pair of high-scoring softball games Monday against Solon that were highlighted by dingers from RyLee Fishback.
Solon, which has a record of 19-13, won both games over the Demons (8-17) by the scores of 14-9 and 20-7.
“We hit the ball well and were solid offensively,” Washington head coach Ben Obermann said. “RyLee Fishback had a great night, hitting two homers for us.”
The 20-7 game was the first of the night and the Demons responded to Solon’s run in the first inning with three of their own. The visitors scored six in the second inning and Washington two. Washington got within 7-6 with a run in the third, but Solon scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth. Washington answered with one in the bottom of the fifth, but Solon put up three in the sixth and five in the seventh.
Fishback’s two home runs were both solo shots. She also hit a single. Kellie Dallmeyer was 2-for-4. Halle Leyden and Anna Venenga had the rest of the hits for Washington.
Cara Linnenkamp pitched six innings with 13 hits, seven walks and two strikeouts. Five of the 15 runs were earned. Haley Mitchell threw an inning with five hits, five earned runs and a walk.
“We’ve got to clean up the little things and avoid giving up free bases,” Obermann said. “Solon is the best offensive team we’ve faced this season, so the freebies are that much more magnified in this instance.”
In the 14-9 loss, Emmy Wenger tossed all seven innings with just one walk and two strikeouts. She gave up 18 hits and 12 earned runs.
Dallmeyer went 2-for-4. Venenga, Linnenkamp and Leyden each connected for a double.
Washington took the lead in the game at 7-6 with seven runs in the fifth inning, but the visitors responded with eight runs in the sixth. The Demons added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Washington starts its postseason Thursday with a home game against Grinnell (10-10).
