PACKWOOD — Last year, it took three days to get a final score to a Cardinal Comets at Pekin Panthers football game. This year, it looks like it will take five weeks to get a final.
The two teams had a scheduled regular season game Sept. 11 canceled due to concerns over the coronavirus and will now get a chance to play that contest in a Class 1A playoff opener Friday.
The weather halted last year’s game with Pekin leading 14-0 midway through the third quarter when lightning was spotted. Sunday’s conclusion started in a torrential downpour and ended with a 30-0 Pekin win, one in a 2-7 season. Cardinal was 4-5.
This season, Cardinal is 4-3, Pekin 3-3. Pekin scored 40 points in its first four games, then 80 in the last two. The Comets have been hot and cold. In order, they have scored 62, 7, 35, 43, 8, 74, 8.
Both have defeated Louisa-Muscatine by at least 25 points, lost big to the No. 3 Sigourney-Keota Cobras and defeated Van Buren. Mediapolis won 44-8 at Cardinal and won 20-3 at home over Pekin. Cardinal set a school record for points in a 74-0 win over Van Buren while Pekin’s win was 42-21.
Cardinal’s Griffin Greiner is first in 1A in receiving touchdowns and fifth in yards while Maddux Jones is first in quarterback rating and third in passing TDs.
Pekin is 13th in rushing yards, having played one less game than most. Michael Jones is 18th with 665.
The unbeaten Cobras will host the winner of this game next Friday in Sigourney.
