BURLINGTON — Four Southeast Conference teams met at Burlington High School on Thursday night for a double dual, but only one walked out a perfect 2-0. Fairfield scooped up a couple of SEC wins to lead the area. Mt. Pleasant and Burlington each went 1-1, and Washington finished 0-2.

Fairfield had to battle for both wins. The Trojans erased a 30-0 deficit to beat Mt. Pleasant, 48-30, and nipped Burlington, 34-33.

“I told the guys last night that we were going to have two tough duals tonight. I said prepare yourself for a fight, and they kind of pumped their chest out and said ‘We are.’”

The dual against Burlington came down to the last match. Grady Flynn pinned Burlington’s John Schuelka in 30 seconds to put the Trojans up seven points ahead of a forfeit at 106.

Mt. Pleasant went 1-1 on the day. After dropping the opening dual against Fairfield, the Panthers knocked off Washington, 51-15.

“Anytime you can get on the mat this year is a good night,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. The kids wrestled well, and there were definitely some good matches.”

Washington was coming off an opening-dual loss to Burlington. The Demons won on an 11-5 decision by Jacob Miller at 138 pounds, the first of two wins for him on the day, and Curtis Stender won by pinfall at 195 pounds, but Washington fell 48-9.

“There were a lot of close matches that we didn’t win tonight,” said Washington head coach Brent Van Weelden. “I didn’t think we wrestled as good as we could tonight, but our kids are good, they’ll come focused tomorrow and we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant will both be back in action on Saturday at the Williamsburg invitational. Washington will wrestle in a tournament at Louisa-Muscatine.
