Baseball champs crowned

DES MOINES — Champions were crowned at Principal Park Saturday in each of the four classes of baseball.

After Mid-Prairie was eliminated by West Lyon in the Iowa High School Athletic Association state tournament, West Lyon advanced to play defending Class 2A champion Van Meter.

The two schools had met in the championship game of football with West Lyon gaining the title 50-14. The baseball semifinal went Van Meter’s way 3-1. Des Moines Christian edged North Linn, Troy Mills 4-2 in eight innings in the other semifinal. Van Meter defended its title with a 6-0 victory over Des Moines Christian.

In 3A, Clear Creek-Amana had advanced out of the district with Washington, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield by edging Solon 8-7 then blasting Davenport Assumption 12-3. CCA lost in the first round at state 4-3 to Norwalk. Norwalk defeated Marion 10-0 in six innings in the semifinal. Gilbert beat Dallas Center-Grimes 14-7 in the other semifinal. Norwalk won the 3A title 8-6 over Gilbert.

Johnston defeated Ankeny 11-8 in the 4A title game.

The 1A title game was Don Bosco 3, Mason City Newman 2. Southeast Iowa Super Conference member Notre Dame lost in the state quarterfinal 11-1 to Saint Mary’s Remsen. St. Mary’s lost to Newman 2-0 in nine innings in a semifinal. The other semifinal was Don Bosco 9, Kingsley-Pierson 1.
