2 die in Thursday collision on Highway 1 near Brighton

Two people died in a collision Thursday night in Washington County just west of Brighton.

The Iowa State Patrol provided the following information.

At about 5:30 p.m., 66-year-old Patricia Remington of Brighton, driving a Cheverolet Equinox, was heading north on Fir Ave, south of Highway 1.

At the same time, a Chrysler Pacifica driven by 29-year-old Westley Vaughan of Oskaloosa was heading east on Highway 1.

Remington failed to stop at the Highway 1 intersection and collided with Vaughan.

Both vehicles came to rest in the northeast ditch, and the accident was reported by a passerby.

Remington and 67-year-old passenger Nita Hesseltine of Rubio were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the state medical examiner.

Vaughan and 25-year-old passenger Mateo Ariza were injured. Vaughan was transported to the Washington County Hospital, and Ariza was transported to the University of Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol accident report states the two individuals were saved by a seat belt.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Fire, Washington County Ambulance and Brighton Fire all responded to the accident.

The accident is still under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
