WILTON — It has been a great start to the season for the 15th-ranked Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team, and they kept up their early-season run at the Wilton tournament this weekend. W-MU went 3-1 to take second in the tournament, beating Mt. Pleasant in a Henry County battle along the way.
The Wolves’ win over Mt. Pleasant came early in the round robin tournament. W-MU defeated the Panthers 25-10, 25-15, utilizing a 16-kill performance by junior star Jenna BUffington.
After beating the Panthers, W-MU swept Midland 25-9 and 25-13. The Wolves were defeated by Wilton, 25-17 and 25-12 in the de facto championshpi game, but bounced back for a 25-10, 25-16 win over Hilcrest Academy.
Buffington wound up with 37 kills on the day to lead W-MU. Anna Hudson had 11 kills and Milinda Oepping had 10.
Kayla Edwards finished the day with 50 assists. Kyndal Townsley led the team with 33 digs, and both Buffington and Jami Wilkerson had 20 digs. Oepping led the team with seven blocks. Hudson had 11.
Townsley led the squad in serving. She was 35-42 with nine aces. Wilkerson was 33-37 with six aces of her own.
Despite the loss to W-MU, Mt. Pleasant did pick up its second and third wins of the day. The Panthers defeated Hillcrest 25-10, 25-10, and then outlasted Midland 25-16, 21-25, 15-12.
Mt. Pleasant is now 3-12 overall and will take on Ft. Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 17. W-MU is 10-3 and will travel to Columbus on Tuesday as well.
