MONTEZUMA — It wasn’t an easy task for the Winfeild-Mt. Union football team on Friday night, and although the Wolves did stick with their undefeated opponents from Montezuma, they eventually faltered 76-48.
Despite the loss, quarterback Daunte Oepping had one of the biggest nights of anybody in the district, rushing for 184 yards and three touchdowns, and also throwing for 71 yards and a score. The Braves did pick off two of Oepping’s pass attempts.
Juanito Piper had another good all-around game. He ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and led the defense with eight tackles and an interception.
The Wolves had three total takeaways. Oepping recovered one fumble on the day, as did Caleb Faler.
W-MU fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in district play. The Wolves will host defending district champion Iowa Valley this week. That Tiger team was ranked coming into this week but will likely fall out after getting upset by English Valleys on Friday night.
