PACKWOOD — Four Union area teams were at Pekin High School on Tuesday for a girls basketball jamboree. Fairfield, No. 5 Van Buren, Cardinal and Pekin all tuned up with one half of basketball before the regular season begins this weekend.
The night started out with a matchup between Sigourney and Moravia. The Savages savaged the Hawks 41-7 in their half of play.
The next game up was Cardinal against Twin Cedars. The Comets fell in a nail-biter as Twin Cedars stormed back in the second quarter to win the game 19-18. Maddie Cloke had a big game for the Comets, scoring 13 points.
Fifth-ranked Van Buren took on Fairfield in the third game of the evening, in the only game between two Union area teams. The Warriors shut down the Trojans, winning 22-3.
Van Buren led 11-3 at the end of the first quarter, and beat the Trojans 11-0 in the second. Isabel Manning led the way with seven points and five rebounds. Taryn Scheuermann had six points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Next up were the hosting Panthers. Pekin faced off with Albia, and had no problem picking up a win. Pekin took care of business 24-11.
Cardinal, Pekin and Van Buren will all tip off the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Cardinal will travel to New London, Van Buren will host WACO and Pekin will host Wapello. Fairfield won’t begin their regular season until Tuesday, Dec. 3, against Oskaloosa. The Trojans will host “Meet the Trojans” night tonight (Thursday).
