OTTUMWA — Fairfield flexed its abilities of the softball field Saturday when it defeated two ranked teams.

The Trojans, which have a 16-1 record, are the ninth-ranked team in Class 4A and they took down the 10th-ranked team in Class 5A with a 5-1 win over Ottumwa (10-6). Fairfield also avenged a loss from earlier in the season (the only blemish on the Trojans’ record) when it gave the third-ranked team in Class 3A, Albia, a 7-1 loss, its only blemish on a record of 12-1.

Against Albia, the Trojans scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the fifth while Albia put up its lone run in the third.

Danielle Breen went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead the Trojans in the win over Albia while Allison Rebling got the win in the circle with seven strikeouts, two walks and six hits allowed. Jenna Norris and Delaney Breen also batted in a pair of runs apiece.

Against Ottumwa, the Trojans again scored three runs in the first inning, then added two more in the sixth while the Bulldogs notched their lone score in the fifth.

Danielle Breen cracked a home run for a highlight. Coty Engle got the win with five innings pitched, one walk and eight hits. Rebling threw two innings and had four strikeouts among the six outs Fairfield needed. Engle helped her cause with a two-run double while Hannah Simpson went 2-for-4.
