NORTH SCOTT — Some of the best volleyball teams in eastern Iowa met up at North Scott on Saturday for the Lancers’ home tournament. 2A No. 4 Van Buren went 2-2 on the day in a field stacked with bigger schools.
The Warriors went 2-1 in pool play but were eventually knocked out in the semifinals by hosting North Scott, the seventh-ranked team in Class 4A.
Van Buren began their day with a game against Clinton. The Warriors dropped the first set but battled back to win 14-21, 21-13, 15-6. Selena Sayre had 13 kills and Grace Davidson had 18 digs in the victory.
Next up for the Warriors was Class 4A No. 1 Xavier. Van Buren gave a solid effort against the Saints, but Xavier won 21-12, 21-5. Davidson and Sayre had six kills apiece in the loss.
The Warriors bounced right back against Desnport West, sweeping that game 21-13 and 21-10. Sayre had 21 kills and Isabel Manning had 11 digs to lead Van Buren to the semifinal round.
4A No. 7 North Scott was able to use home court to its advantage in the semis. Davidson had eight kills in the set and Manning had 14 digs, but North Scott escaped 25-19, 25-17, to eliminate Van Buren and earn its spot in the finals.
In a battle of top-10 4A teams, Xavier outlasted North Scott in the championship game. The Saints won 25-23 in the first set and 26-24 in the second.
