FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield wrestling team had five pins in Thursday night’s Southeast Conference dual against Fort Madison, but it wasn’t enough to take down the SEC leaders. The Bloodhounds got away from Fairfield with a 48-30 win.

After dropping the first match of the day, Fairfield rattled off two-straight wins at 220 pounds and 285 pounds. Cesar Smithburg pinned Fort Madison’s Daniel Sokolik in the 220 pound match, and Tarence Craig took down Fort Madison’s Nathan Leasch at 285.

The Bloodhounds responded by winning four of the next five matches, all but the 120-pound bout, which Fairfield’s Jacob Bland won by pinfall. Going into the 138 pound match, Fort Madison led 30-18.

Cohyn Roach made a reversal in the 138-pound match to pin Fort Madison’s Gavin Wiseman in the 138-pound match. That cut the Bloodhounds’ lead to four, at 30-24. Fort Madison would win the next four matches before Fairfield’s Teddy Metcalf closed out the varsity schedule with a pin in the 182 pound match.

Without forfeits counted in, Fairfield wrestled just six points worse than the SEC-leading Hounds, but Fairfield was open at the two lightest weights, 106 pounds and 113 pounds.

“You have to have a full lineup if you’re going to beat a team like Fort Madison,” Fairfield head coach Steve Miller said. “Number one, they’ve got a full lineup, and then number two, they’re tough.”

Miller says the Trojans are still battling to catch up with the majority of the conference experience wise. Like all other Fairfield winter sports, the Trojans started one month late because of the school being online only through November.

“I don’t think you can make up that time and technique,” Miller said. “We’re starting to get there in conditioning, but when you lose a month of a season, you can’t make that time up.”

The Trojans are now 1-2 in conference play. They still have to wrestle Burlington and Mt. Pleasant.
