LONE TREE — A first-inning run was all the No. 14 (1A) Winfield-Mt. Union softball team needed in their Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division win over Lone Tree, but the Wolves decided to add one more for fun in the fifth inning of a 2-0 shutout.
Junior ace Madie Anderson was dominant once again, striking out 19 Lone Tree batters over seven innings.
Anderson helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Molly Miller was 2-for-3 with an RBI of her own. Carlee Sloan and Melina Oepping also collected hits in the win.
Incredibly, Anderson and the Wolves have only given up three runs all season; one in a 1-0 loss to Louisa-Muscatine, the second-ranked team in Class 2A, and two in a 2-1 loss against Highland.
The Wolves are 7-2 overall and 5-2 in North Division play. They will host Mt. Pleasant in their next game on Tuesday.
