MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant City Council approved a zone change ordinance for 1300 and 1302 E. Monroe St. at its meeting on Wednesday evening.
Building and zoning administrator Jack Swarm explained real estate company J & J Mitchel Real Estate made the request to change the property’s zoning, located behind Aldi’s, from B-4 to B-3, which would allow for residential use.
“They desire to build townhomes on the property, which would mirror the townhomes across the street,” Swarm said.
Swarm said the Planning and Zoning Committee had reviewed the ordinance and held a public hearing on the zoning change the day prior but received no comments. The administrator added he received no comments after notifying others in the area and that the move to utilize the area for residential purposes “lines up with plans of the city.”
“I think it’s a really good zone change. It would also help with our housing shortages,” Swarm added.
The council voted unanimously to approve the first reading of the zone change.
