WASHINGTON — A woman whose car caught fire Monday has died, according to a law enforcement official.
At around 2:30 p.m., the woman drove west on West Main Street and attempted to turn around at the dead end. She then traveled northbound and eventually the vehicle became fully engulfed in fire.
A preliminary report stated the vehicle became high centered, possibly causing damage to the undercarriage sparking the fire.
Washington police officer Ethan Hansen located the fire after investigating dark smoke in the air.
The driver was taken by Aircare to the University of Iowa Hospital and the officer was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Chief Jim Lester said the officer did a great job in the initial approach to the fire and working with the victim. After being checked by the hospital, the officer was released to return to duty.
Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider said the woman’s name will not be released until the family is contacted.
