WINFIELD — Believe it or not, football season is nearly upon us, and we’re less than two weeks away from the first high school football games gracing the area.

Today, The Union starts its look ahead at each of the coverage area’s 14 high school football schedules, starting with the squad that will kick off football season for the area: Winfield-Mt. Union.

The Wolves are coming off a 1-8 season in 2018, but they’ll have plenty of talent coming back in 2019. W-MU had just four seniors on the squad last year.

W-MU will play five home games this season. Three of which will be played in the first four games of the season.

The Wolves open their schedule up with Springville, a team that defeated the Wolves 52-28 last season. This game will be one of Class Eight-Man’s special “Week 0” games, taking place on Aug. 23, a full week before most of Iowa begins.

W-MU will get a bye in Week 1, giving them two weeks to prepare to host their second game in a row. The Wolves will host River Ridge High School out of Hanover, Ill., on Sept. 6.

That Week 2 game is a substitution for their originally scheduled contest with Tri-County, a team the Wolves shelled 72-0 for their only win last season. Tri-County will not be fielding a team, which left the rest of the district to find a replacement contest.

W-MU will travel to their first road game on Friday, Sept. 13. The Wolves will take on Montezuma in that game. One week later, they host defending district champion Iowa Valley.

The Wolves will be on the road for two-straight weeks, against English Valleys and Lone Tree, at the end of September and beginning of October. Their first October game will be on homecoming week when they host defending state champion New London in a Henry County showdown.

The Wolves will take on Hartwick-Ladora-Victor (HLV) in their final road game of the year on Oct. 18. After that, they will host rival WACO in the final game of the season on Oct. 25.
